Two LifeMed Alaska professionals have received the distinguished designation of Certified Medical Transport Executive (CMTE) by the Association of Air Medical Services (AAMS). Colt Connolly, Director of Ground Operations, and Scott Williamson, Director of Flight Operations, were both honored for receiving the CMTE designation at the AAMS–Medical Transport Leadership Institute (MTLI) graduation banquet last week. The two men join LifeMed Alaska colleagues Jared Sherman, Glenn Stevens and Tim Nixon, along with approximately 300 other individuals worldwide who currently hold the CMTE credential.
MTLI participants develop leadership and management skills specific to medical transport through formal education programs emphasizing both management theory and its direct practical application. To become certified, applicants must participate in a rigorous educational program over the course of two years, pass a comprehensive written examination and satisfactorily complete a team project related to a timely industry challenge.

First-year MTLI focus areas include marketing/public relations, human resources management, leadership and administration, financial operations, corporate compliance, program development and asset management. Second-year courses focus on appropriate-utilization management; information systems for medical transport services; mergers, acquisitions and alliances; advanced leadership and human resource principles; managing change and redesigning work; and case studies exercises.
Certification is valid for three years, with 30 MEUs (Management Education Units) required for recertification.
The mission of the AAMS–Medical Transport Leadership Institute is to enhance leadership and management of medical transportation services through formal education programs stressing management theory and its direct practical application.
MTLI provides continuing education and certification for individuals currently managing medical transportation services, those seeking management positions, and others with direct and indirect involvement who desire greater understanding of this dynamic profession.
Students gain expertise and practical skills through formal didactic and participatory sessions designed to instill creative thinking and decision-making. Participants also obtain valuable insight into real life challenges by networking with industry leaders. MTLI operates with a rigorous approach to competency-based education, utilizing formal classroom hours, mandatory student participation, written testing, oral presentations and a code of professional conduct. Due to the demands of the program, students will be expected to complete out of classroom assignments. Graduates of the two year program receive certification as a Certified Medical Transport Executive.
